Asbestos Management Survey at aircraft hangar in Stansted Airport

An asbestos survey has been conducted in a big aircraft hanger situated in Stansted Airport. The reason why the survey has been conducted is that it aims at identifying all the asbestos containing materials present in the building.

Survey Approach & Findings

Given the size and type of the hangar, our surveyors conducted a thorough investigation throughout all accessible internal and external parts of the building.

Industrial buildings like hangars usually incorporate several construction materials. Therefore, special focus was placed on:

• Roof and wall cladding systems
• Insulating materials and service ducts
• Ceiling finishes and structural components
• Plant and maintenance rooms

For any materials that showed signs of having asbestos, we took control samples according to the HSE guidelines.

The collected samples were then properly packaged and dispatched to a laboratory accredited by UKAS for analysis.

Recommendations

After the surveying and lab tests were conducted, an asbestos report detailing the following points was issued to the client:

– Identification and position of all surveyed materials
– Determination of presence of asbestos
– Assessment of material quality and related risk
– Practical advice on how to handle the material safely

Due to the conditions at the hangar, all recommendations had to be as non-disruptive as possible while still fully meeting asbestos regulations.

Outcome

The survey provided the client with a clear asbestos register and management plan, allowing the hangar to continue operating safely while ensuring any future maintenance or refurbishment works can be planned appropriately.
